Want to Make a Difference?

    My youngest children are tucked in their beds.  Their tummies are full.  They have showered and brushed.  They are healthy.  Their limbs are long and straight.  Their hair and eyes sparkle with happiness and wholeness.  They have plans for college.  They are warm when the weather is cold.  They are tired from school and play.  They like to read before they fall asleep and many nights I tuck their blankets around them while pulling books from their sleeping fingers.  I remove the electronics from under their pillows.  They don't have everything they want, but they have everything they need.  I have been richly blessed.
     A world away from us in Indonesia lives Jimi.  He is the ten year old we sponsor through Compassion International.  In a letter we received in May, Jimi shared that he had recovered from being seriously ill.  He had been hospitalized and in a coma. His mother had been told there was no hope.  No hope for her ten year old son.  I can only imagine his mother's anguish.  Jimi had an illness that I had never heard of.  But our God is a God of Hope.   Jimi was healed.  How his mother must have rejoiced.  I am so grateful for the life of this little boy we share.
  Mothers everywhere share some of the same dreams for their children.  We want them to grow up to be happy and healthy, to have an education, to have someone to love and someone to love them.  Mother's are far more the same, then we are different.
     This world can be a dangerous place for those who live in poverty.  Out of the riches that have so graciously been given to me, I give just $38.00 a month to make the world a little better for Jimi - and his mother.
     September is Blog month at Compassion.  Compassion has a goal of finding sponsors for 3,108 children during the month of September.   Visit their web site and prayerfully consider if you can make a difference in the life of a child.

I Just Like You

A devotion from my archives:  September 29, 2009

     Last week at school I went into one of our kindergarten classes.  There were a few children in the class that I wanted to get to know better.  They were the ones who had some trouble with the tasks during kindergarten screening.  I wanted to see how we could help them to be successful with the kindergarten curriculum.  Their teacher was just beginning to read a story to the children who sat near her on the rug.  She invited me to join them.  I criss-crossed my legs and sat down.
     One of the little guys that I was there to see, glanced over at me, then inched over and put his head on my shoulder.  I smiled at him and then nodded back at the book his teacher was reading.  He grinned then plumped himself right into my lap.  He settled in and made himself comfortable.  I whispered to him, “Look at you just inviting yourself onto my lap.”  He nuzzled his head under my neck and whispered back, “I just like you.”
     Isn’t that the sweetest thing?  “I just like you.”
     That little boy had given me a glimpse of how I want to be as a child of God.
     I have a Heavenly Father with arms open wide and a lap that is always available for me to clamber into.  He wants me to sit with Him not only when I’m hurt or afraid, but to enjoy being in His presence because I just like Him.
Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.
I say to the Lord, "You are my Lord;
apart from you I have no good thing."
Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup;
You have made my lot secure.
The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
Surely I have a delightful inheritance.
I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
Even at night my heart instructs me.
I have set the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken. ~Psalm 16:1-2 & 5-8
     Have you climbed into God’s lap lately, just to tell Him, “I just like you?”

Compassion International: Hopes and Dreams

     As kids we dream about the things we would like to do when we grow up.  We know what we would like to be, where we would like to live, and what we will do for fun.  We imagine our future selves at work and play.
     When I was a child I wanted to be like Miss Kitty on the TV show Gunsmoke.  But if I couldn't be Miss Kitty, then I was determined to be a teacher.  To that end, I marked every piece of paper that crossed in front of me with a red pen.
      When I was in third grade my teacher assigned our class the task of writing a poem about a place that we would like to vacation.  I knew immediately that I wanted to write about Florida.  I could practically smell the salt air, the fresh oranges, and feel the sand between my toes.  I labored over my poem for hours considering carefully what word could possibly rhyme with orange.  The first stanza of my poem went like this:
Florida is the land I would like to see
Where oranges grow upon a tree.
Where oceans make a lot of noise
And little children play with toys.
Yes, Florida is the land I would like to see.
     There were at least two more stanzas as poetic as that.  They have fortunately been lost in the mists of time.  My girl friend copied a poem about Hawaii out of an old Highlights magazine.  Her poem went up on the bulletin board with a big red A+.  Mine did not.  I was crushed.  But a few years later, my dream was fulfilled when my mother won a trip to Florida for the family.
 As parents we have hopes and dreams for our children.  We offer prayers for their futures.  That they will be kind, happy, smart, healthy, and eventually self supporting.
     For the month of September Compassion International has set a goal of getting sponsorship for 3,108 children who live in poverty.  Sponsoring a child costs as little as $38 a month.  When a child receives a sponsor he/she will receive the opportunity to hear about Jesus, education, food, health care, and more.  You will change this child's life.  You can write them letters and they will write back to you.  It is a beautiful way to live a ministry, and to participate in something bigger than yourself.
      Please take a minute to watch the video below where mothers share their hopes and dreams for their children.  Please prayerfully consider if you can sponsor a child through Compassion.

             If you decide to sponsor a child, or if you already do so, leave a comment with his/her name and country.
          We sponsor Jimi in Indonesia.

One Little Word: September

     A single word to frame your year is a powerful thing.  On the first of the month a group of students from the One Little Word class at Big Picture Classes with Ali Edwards share our monthly assignments on our blogs.  It is a wonderful way to stay inspired with our words.
     The word that chose me for 2012 is "Dwell."  Dwell means to remain, to live or continue, to abide, to linger over, to keep the attention directed, and to reside.  It is a place of rest.  It is a special place.
     My word dwell or its synonym continues to pop up in unexpected places.  When I saw this sign on sale at Hobby Lobby I knew that it had to come home with me.  It is displayed on our front porch.  It says, "In our home let love abide (dwell), and bless all those who step inside."
     The assignment for the month of August was to take a breath, take a photo of ourselves, and add a few positive words to remind us of our journey.  I so much prefer to be on the back side of a camera that I decided to take a picture at an upcoming family wedding.  You know, when my hair would be done and my makeup on, and I look as good as it gets.  I completely forgot that the wedding is September 2 - the day after I was due to post this.  So in the spirit of fun, I will share two other pictures.
      My niece,  Susie, took a picture of me with this sign when we were on a shopping trip in Pennsylvania.  Somehow, I don't think these were the words of affirmation that Ali had in mind.
     This picture is of my husband and myself, our six kids, our daughter-in-law, two nieces, my sister-in-law and our dog.  My brother was the photographer.  The occasion was a fun filled evening when all of my children were home.  My son, James, and his wife were visiting from Georgia.  Brian came from upstate New York.  I am surrounded by laughing family - right where I like to dwell.
     Here is the list of Blog Hop participants.  Visit them and share the fun.

What Is Your Life Verse?

     Christian leaders were asked, "What is your life verse and why is it meaningful to you?"  Their answers are as interesting as they are inspirational.  Watch for Wess Stafford of Compassion International.

     There are two verses that I believe God has given me.
     The first verse that called me is Jude 22.
And of some have compassion, making a difference.
     I have always wanted my life to count for something, to make a difference in this world, to leave it better in some small way for my having been here.
     The other verse is Psalm 27:4
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.
     Do you have a life verse?  What is it?
